A wide range of different cultural experiences were on offer last Week for the annual Cultural Diversity Day. Students sampled the dance, drama, music, food and arts from around the world as they spent a day “off-timetable” gaining an insight into other cultures.
African drumming and Indian music workshops were led by members of staff, and experts visited the school to lead sessions on Indian dancing and Kung Fu dancing. Other workshops were available in hip hop dancing, kabaddi, an Indian contact sport and salsa dancing.
There were also lesson to link ICT to different cultures, through sessions on Britkid website and creating a Google doodle on the theme of My England. Artists could focus on Chinese calligraphy and making identity face masks, or making silk paintings inspired by Chinese art.
The day provides an opportunity to reflect on what different cultures mean and have to offer in today’s world, and encourages students to think what cultural diversity really means, through taking part in a range of learning activities that are both fun and thought-provoking.
