The Geography and History schemes of work are intended to give students a good basic understanding of the subjects, and to make the subjects relevant to their daily lives. In History, between Year 7 and Year 9, pupils study the subject from the Romans to the twentieth century, giving them a good general understanding. Those who choose GCSE History also have a good start for the Modern History syllabus they will follow for the exam.
In Geography, students start a “tour of the world” in Year 7, taking a fortnight to gain an impression of each country and develop their understanding of the international context of the subject, before focusing closer to home. In Year 8, students start looking at the local community around them, including using the website “Up My Street” to analyse house prices, crime and other issues. This course allows for a greater development of student skills, and a new GCSE course has recently been introduced which follows on more logically from KS3 work.
Resources
The internet and web-based technologies are used to access a wide range of resources, including Moodle, DVD resources and interactive whiteboards. Visits to support the Geography curriculum have included a Year 7 trip to north Wales and a Year 9 field trip to Derbyshire. GCSE Geography students have investigated shopping habits in Sale and Manchester, looked at conflicting demands on our national parks in Wales, and investigated the regeneration of London Docklands and the impact of the new Olympics site. BTEC Travel and Tourism students take part in regular visits to attractions like Old Trafford, the Trafford Centre and Salford Quays for study purposes.
The History curriculum is supported by trips to Styal Mill, Trafford’s Holocaust Commemoration and other relevant sites.
