The BTEC Diploma in Health & Social Care is one of the vocational options open to Year 10 and 11 students. The Diploma is worth 4 GCSEs when fully completed, and the school has a 100% record of achievement in the subject.
Health & Social Care is taught one full day per week and in Year 10, students take part in a period of relevant work experience. Many of them go on to training in the health care sector at college and in the workplace, including nursing cadet training and child care courses.
Students have to complete six portfolios of work on different topics for their assessments, including Rights in the Social Care Sector and Creative & Therapeutic Activities. Course Team Leader Mrs Hall brings in external experts from various professions to give the students a wide perspective on possible careers.
The school is moving towards the new Diploma in Society, Health & Development, which will widen the curriculum to cover all the public services and “people professions”. Course Leader Mrs Hall says: “It’s an excellent course for life, looking at the impact of diet, health, medical conditions, age and society on individuals: from baby and child development to old age. We cover physical, emotional and intellectual development – it really gives students an insight into how people and society work and prepares them for a wide range of future careers.”
